Ninth Annual Summer Aviation Camp at Chanute Air Museum See Photos of previous Aviation Camps
The Chanute Air Museum is hosting the ninth annual Aviation Camp for students entering 7th grade through 12th grade or recent high school graduate June 8-12, 2009.
The camp will run from 8:30 to 3:00 Monday through Friday. Campers will learn about basic aviation science in a hands-on setting that will include hot air ballooning, rockets, aircraft engines, and the theory of flight. They will also learn about careers related to aviation through classroom instruction, lectures, videos, hands-on operation of tools and equipment and actual flying aircraft. Camp also includes a trip to the Challenger Space Center in Bloomington for a simulated space mission and a flight with University of Illinois flight instructors. The camp is co-sponsored by the Chanute Air Museum and the University of Illinois Flight Institute.
Classes will be held in the Discovery Learning Center in the Chanute Air Museum, in the museum hanger, in various airplanes, the Challenger Learning Center in Bloomingon, IL and at Willard Airport in Champaign. Camp tuition is $175.00 for the entire week. There are scholarship funds available on a first come first served basis. Please contact the museum for more details about applying for scholarships.

This is a unique opportunity for children to learn about aviation science and career opportunities in a hands-on way that is enjoyable. This also provides the opportunity for campers to enjoy the rich heritage of Chanute Air Museum, the impact it had on Central Illinois and the U.S. Air Force. The Chanute Air Museum collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets aviation and aerospace artifacts. Special emphasis is directed to the life and accomplishments of Octave Chanute, Chanute Field/Chanute Air Force Base and its technical training programs, the history of Illinois aviation, and the community of Rantoul, Illinois. The museum has a family-friendly atmosphere and includes over forty aircraft from past and present for viewing. This is the largest plane collection in the State of Illinois.
