| The LGM-30A Minuteman I intercontinental
ballistic missile (ICBM) was a second-generation weapon that
used solid propellant rather than the liquid propellants used
in the earlier Atlas and Titan ICBMs. It was
designed to be maintained in, and launched from, hardened
underground silos where it would be virtually immune from
an enemy nuclear attack. It was eventually replaced in service
by the Minuteman II and Minuteman III ICBMs.
The missile on display is on loan to Octave Chanute Aerospace
Museum from the National Museum of the United States Airforce.
