Women with Wings
June 25, 2011
Mark your calendars for this special event!
Plans are being made for the second Women with Wings event to be held at the Chanute Air Museum. The date is June 25th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The keynote speaker is Major L. Tammy Duckworth, Illinois Army National Guard. Major Duckworth is a former Army helicopter pilot and an Iraq War Veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart, the Army Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. She is the former director of the Illinois Dept. of Veterans Affairs and currently serves as the Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The program will include contact with real airplanes and the basics of aviation. There will be a session on the history of women in aviation and discussion on aviation careers. Demonstrations of hot air ballooning, airplane mechanics and other areas of aviation will be presented. For fun, participants may build and fly a wood and Styrofoam airplane. The University of Illinois Institute of Aviation will offer 30-minute "fun flights" for $65.00. Women and high school girls are invited.
